2018 Hall of Fame

EberhartThe faculty, staff and administration of Cumberland County High School are thrilled to announce Mrs. Donna Maples Eberhart as the 2018 Hall of Fame inductee. Mrs.Eberhart, a 1978 graduate of Cumberland County High School, is affectionately known to many as the “glitter queen.”  Following graduation, Donna married Patrick Eberhart. Patrick’s father and mother, William D. and Janice Swann Eberhart, were both educators in the system, and his father served as the Superintendent of Schools. She and Pat have five children--all graduates of Cumberland County High School. “Believing education to be of the greatest importance to not only my children but to the entire community,” Donna commented, “I began volunteering in the classrooms of our elementary schools.” Donna's incredible talent was initially revealed at Martin Elementary where she filled the hallways with detailed artwork centered on a “Cruise Around the World” theme. “Exploring the Rainforest” was the theme of year two, and with this adventure, the “glitter animals” were born. Donna, along with Carol Darling, Kathy Ivey, and sister Sharon, teamed up to create beauty all around the community. With inspiration coming from Discovering America, a book written by Mrs. Dick Chaney, the team spent countless summer hours chalking pictures on school walls. When her oldest child entered CCHS in 1994, Donna’s involvement in the school system continued. She was an active member of the football, band, and cheer booster clubs and served as cheer booster president from 1999- 2001. She and Tammy Reynolds painted and glittered props for the bands half-time shows and worked to raise money for new uniforms and two trips to perform at Florida's Disney World. In 2008 and 2009 the band, under the direction of Josh Squire, won the coveted Mickey Award for their performance of their Pirates of the Caribbean show.

In the spring of 1999, Donna was approached by a member of the cheer squad who was concerned that a tight budget was hampering the efforts of the prom decorating committee. The glitter queens” came to the rescue. Donna and Carol worked on a plan to make the decorations rather than ordering the expensive ones, thus saving the school an enormous amount of money. They worked their magic to create props, centerpieces, and decorations in the old football weight room. Down through the years, this facility served as prep space for proms, homecoming, and many other school events. Additionally, Donna has worked in our community creating decorations for school-
related special events sponsored by First National Bank of Tennessee, Dave Kirk, Coca-Cola, and Wal-Mart.
When Donna discovered that she had been chosen for this year’s Hall of Fame, she stated, “I love children, painting, music, sports, and my church. I have been greatly blessed with the privilege to be a part of some of the most amazing teachers and leaders in our community. I have been honored to ‘glitter’ some of the largest canvases ever, which I believe has helped hundreds of children celebrate some of the most memorable and exciting events in their school life. Who could ask for more in life than getting to do the things you love with the people you love?” Please join us at a reception to celebrate Donna Maples Eberhart on Thursday, September 6 at 4:45 in the school library. Mrs. Eberhart will serve as the Grand Marshall of the Homecoming parade immediately following the reception.
